I invited all my leaders for a workshop.

I played a video of our company chairman talking about the importance of the 5 core values of the organization. These core values are written and described in 5 large posters inside the boardroom.

I took off the first core value poster from the wall, carried it and put it on top of the boardroom table in front of everyone. I asked everyone to join me in reading it aloud. I asked each leader to write one word or phrase on a piece of post-it paper on how s/he relates to the core value as an individual. I asked each of them to come in front and talk about it as they stick the piece of paper on the core value poster. I kept silent and did not summarize what everyone said. Instead, I took off the next core value poster from the wall and put it in front of everyone. We did this activity for all 5 core values.

After that, without saying a word, I played the “Together” Nike commercial of LeBron James which had a cheer in the end of the advertisement. Then, I introduced them to the powerful ONE Team cheer of our Team to rally everyone. Finally, without any closing remarks, I thanked everyone and told them the workshop is over.

There was silence in the boardroom and no one stood up from their seats. One by one my leaders started to voluntarily share their feedback about the workshop.

The general feedback was:

🎯 Each one knows the core values since its part of the induction when they were employed in the company. They see and read the core value posters on the wall. Putting a spotlight on the core value together as one leadership Team in this workshop gave a totally different powerful meaning to the core values.

🎯 Hearing each leader describe what each of the core values mean to them and hearing that there is great alignment from each of the leaders was powerful. Everyone felt great that we all stand tall for the same deep Sense of Why.

🎯 Everyone expressed they felt refreshed, energized and more inspired to be a leader in the organization.

🎯 They acknowledged that while Patrick was the most senior person in the boardroom, he empowered everyone to verbally describe how each of the core values resonated to them. Patrick being a facilitator, playing the videos, carrying the posters and leading the Team cheer is equivalent to how he personally resonated to the core values and demonstrated his alignment to each and every leader in the boardroom… not by words but by action.
