Why do you waste time talking to bottom performers

One of my leaders asked me “Patrick, why do you always waste time talking to bottom performing Associates? We already have a process in place.. You would rather spend more time with our top performers”.

I told her the story about the starfishes on the beach.

After a strong typhoon the night before, a young man was jogging by the ocean shore. He saw a young woman picking up starfishes and throwing them back to the water.

He told the woman laughing: “Why do you do that? Can’t you see there are hundred of starfishes stranded on the beach who did not make it back to the sea before the typhoon. You cannot possibly help them all!!”

The young woman picked up one starfish and threw it back to the water and said… “Well, I changed that guy’s life”

I then told my leader.. I spend time with ALL my Associates, not just with the top performers. IF a bottom performer raises her/his hand and tells me her/his performance may be struggling now due to valid reasons but is committed that s/he is “All In” and will improve… then, I’ll help them. Each of my Associates is family and no one gets left behind until you tell me you quit.

I had difficulty performing some of the diving skill activities during my PADI Open Water certification. My dive master, JM, patiently coached me and made sure I enjoy diving and get certified.
