When You Think You’re Better Than Your Boss

SNAPS DAY 318

No two leaders are the same because each leader is a consequence of a thousand different things and experiences. Each one has their own unique strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Progressive leaders are wired to constantly find ways to compliment, collaborate, and align with other leaders across band levels; especially with their boss.

Meanwhile, due to the abundance of managers in the global rat race, they tend to be very competitive. Some compare their competencies and even compensation with other managers. A few conclude that they are better than their boss. My initial reaction is: “According to who?” and “Based on which competency?”

There are several (a) performance competencies and there are several (b) leadership competencies. You should rate yourself now from 1-10 for each of those competencies. Describe the rationale for your rating. Then, determine how success looks like by identifying the rating you aspire for, by when and why.

In basketball, there are several competencies across two main categories: (a) shooting the ball and (b) preventing your opponent from shooting the ball. You must be 10/10 in all competencies to claim that you are great and better than your boss. Seasoned leaders know that if you achieve a 10/10… it’s time to increase the goal instead of claiming you’re the best.

This is my son, Great, during a Filipino Basketball Academy summer camp in Dumlao gym in 2016. Do you think he made the shot?
