Anything In Excess Is Not Good

Being too understanding and lenient to your Associates is not the best method to show that you are are a nice, understanding and cool leader. Not because you are friendly and popular with your Associates, it immediately means you are a charismatic leader or a servant leader. For example, there are certain policies (HR, Quality, Compliance, etc) that requires leaders to implement strictly.
On the other have, being a very strict, heartless and a “black or white” leader to your Associates is not the best method to show you are a compliant leader. It does not immediately mean that you are an effective autocratic leader. Even if you manage a highly regulated industry, it still requires leaders to engage, connect and serve their Associates. Otherwise, there will be challenges like dissatisfaction at work, productivity issues, attrition and increase in back-fill hiring costs.
There has to be the right balance of the various traits of a leader. Anything in excess is not good.
Leaders are responsible and accountable in creating and maintaining a work environment of choice that attracts top talent who aspire to join and grow in your organization. A work environment of choice needs to have the right balance of high trust across all levels, high Associate engagement, has nurturing & leadership development programs, has the right challenges to stretch capabilities, has the right career opportunities for its Associates, is transformational & digital, is profitable & has huge growth, has a lot of fun, has a collaborative management culture, cares for the community & the environment and drives positive change.
*About the photo
This is my gorgeous wife Prudence holding an extra-large sized delicious banana split from Filling Station Diner in Makati.
Not because there’s an abundance of ice cream, I will let my wife eat it all. I know that too much sugar is bad for her health. Since I care about my wife, I will not allow her to eat this dessert by herself. Me and our two daughters (not seen in the photo) who are with us are sharing this huge desert with her.
