"Hey Workaholic!"

SNAPS DAY 291

As we learn the ropes and build our careers, we are like a sponge in absorbing all the learning we can from subject matter experts, from our bosses and from leaders of our community. We attend abundant number of training and certification programs so we can expand and reinforce our skills. We identify mentors, coaches and influencers to enhance our competencies. We raise both our hands to volunteer in all the projects our managers throw at us. When the project is not from our department, the more we get excited with the new learning and expanded leadership connect. In fact, our managers can never force us to do more work because we are a “volunteer”.

We do all of these at the expense of our relationship and quality time with our family, God and including ourselves. Have you noticed how many birthdays and special occasions you have missed or attended by mentally absent because you were checking emails or in a conference call? How many times have you asked your family to keep silent inside the car as you drove to a family holiday because you just need to take one important conference call. The excessive desire or gluttony for more work is called workaholic in the corporate world.

I am guilty of this too. I work 8 hours a day and 8 hours a night almost every day. I told myself this has to stop. So I push myself to diet & eat the right food, exercise, I have more frequent dates with my gorgeous wife Prudence, we do more activities with our 4 awesome kids, I spend time with my granddaughter, we went back to physically attending mass in the church versus online, and I am inspired every day writing and sharing leadership best practices with other leaders.

*About the photo

The family was complete during two weekends in September when we went to Zoobic Safari in Subic, Zambales province up north, and, when we went to Terrazzas De Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Batangas province down south. What I realized when you have a grand daughter, she becomes the center of happiness of the entire family, everyone wanting to play with her, talk to her and just be around her. Here are Avree’s photos with her bubble camera to take photos of the animals in the zoo, and, her toy water sprinkler to water the ocean (haha).
