Some leaders are able to adjust their leadership style depending on the readiness level of the Associates for a particular skill, situation or project. This relationship requires both the leader and Associate to be aligned in achieving the overall organizational goals, positively motivated to learn new things and committed to the success of each other. This also requires a higher level of maturity from both the leader and Associate. This does not work effectively when there is a “will issue” from either the leader or Associate.

Situational leadership starts the relationship in a mentorship environment wherein the mentor tells and shows the Associate how things are done. The measure of success here is performance based. You need to meet the minimum expectations before you progress the relationship to the next stage. What follows is a relationship that is a blend of autocratic and coaching leadership styles. The leader praises the Associate for the things s/he is doing right and immediately guides the mentee back on track when s/he is steering away. The third relationship is a blend of coaching and charismatic leadership styles. The leader is the greatest cheerleader of the Associate when s/he is doing great. Then, when the Associate stumbles at times, the leader encourages the Associate to figure out the solution based on what s/he has learned plus her/his own experience. The fourth relationship is similar to a coaching and laissez-faire environment. The Associate has strong empowerment from the leader who is available for regular monthly check points or as needed.

*About the photo

I enrolled my daughter, Tres, in a driving school when she stayed with me for a couple of months in Cebu City.

Sit Lead is like learning how to drive. Tres started learning in the classroom. Then, on the passenger seat observing how the instructor drives. Then, the instructor is coaching her on how she drives. Until finally, she can drive on her own.

This photo of her holding the car key captures the view of the city from Mr. A Restaurant. This is the first time I allowed her to drive our Cebu car going up the sharp winding roads of the spectacular mountain of Busay Cebu. We were both happy we arrived safely. 😁
