Some of my leaders tell me it will help a lot if their spouse (*or partner or family members) would be a little bit more understanding and supportive about their job. A few try to explain that they are working on a promotion and as such, need to pour in extra work hours in order to train, get certified, work on a special project, or attend immersion sessions. Others would explain they are in a critical role affecting some hundreds or thousands of other people and need to render extra work hours or need to travel during certain times of the month, quarter or year. Somehow, no matter what they do to explain the role they are in or aspire to be in, they are sometimes not understood and this stresses them out.

Aside from coaching conversations, one of the things I offer to my leaders is… I want to meet your spouse* so I can inform her/him how much you are valued at work.

Specifically, my suggestions are are follows:

⭐️ Ask your spouse to fetch you from work and then treat her/him for coffee at the nearest Starbucks.

⭐️ Let’s plan on where you and your spouse will do your groceries this month. I will deliberately plan for me & my gorgeous wife Prudence to also do our groceries in the same store.

On both occasions…. we shall coordinate discretely when you are already there… and I will “accidentally” bump into you guys.

Introduce me as your senior executive at work. Then, in less than 2 minutes..., I will casually inform your spouse how much our entire organization and our clients value your hard work. I will give some examples of how you inspire our Team to achieve great things. I will also thank your spouse for being your source of inspiration to constantly perform your best.

Then, I will go my way
