I learned a lot of things from my main mentor through “experiential learning”. Dad drove up north and down south to wherever his car can take us just so he can talk about the history of the places we visit, the food, the music and all other kinds of learnings along the way.
He also said “the student must be better than the teacher” He stressed.. “You must be better than me, anak”. In fact… he said I must not only keep these learnings within the family. Dad’s rule since I was very young is that I must pass on the learning to others and not keep it to myself.
Even when my dad is no longer with us, I can still hear his voice, feel his coaching, see his facial non-verbal reactions in almost every situation. This is because we talk very regularly even when I started my own family. When I had my own house, I made sure I brought a lot of food every Sunday morning like a fiesta to my parent’s house so we can connect, chat and sing together along with my wife and children.
Dad was the one who made me realize that “Mentoring is equivalent to Caring”.

In so doing.. I treat my mentees at work just like how I mentor my children. It is based on a lot of love, care and excitement for my mentee to be greater than me. I train them, coach them, guide them…. and sometimes even hand-hold them so they learn a new skill or enhance a behavior through experiential learning towards greatness. I also require them to “Pass the learning to the next generation, pass it on to others, and commit to ensure their mentees become better than them because the student must be better than the teacher”.
About the photo:
My family loves music, singing and dancing. My grand parents on both sides know how to play the piano. My parents know how to play the piano. I played the piano when I was a kid. I enrolled my eldest daughter, Nina Gabrielle, in piano lessons. Incidentally, her teacher is one of my grand father’s students.
The photo shows Nina introducing the piano to her baby, Avrielle Reese.
