In a solution defense, I sensed the clients like us but not interested in the Site we were proposing. They said repeatedly… “access to talent is key to our decision and I want to see it for myself”.

I told my presenting Team - we are going to one of our other Sites, the rest of the presentation will happen in the van. I stopped the van at the first train station and I told my client, “Come, let’s check out the talent pool and how they commute to the Site”. I deliberately spoke to several passengers in the train ride. My clients noticed what I was trying to do, they participated and enjoyed talking to random strangers in the train.

When we got to the Site, they spoke to one of the Recruiters who honestly told them “Sorry I am not familiar with your company. Can you describe the process we shall do for you, and differentiate your top and mid associate profile, then I can tell you how we will hire for your account”. We also barged in a Training class and randomly sat with Associates in the cafeteria.

Our sales guy asked me discretely.. “Patrick, I assume you pre-selected all these folks and this sudden transfer to this Site is part of your plan?”

I said… “No. I did not pre-plan this trip to this Site. I simply trusted the Team”

Our sales exec told me “We should not have left the Boardroom! You stopped the meeting at the Recruitment slide, we have so many more slides to present! And… I wonder why your boss allowed you to do this if its not pre-planned”

I replied… “Because my boss trusts me too”

“I know the Recruiter coz she is tenured. There were 2 ongoing classes, I went inside the more noisy class. I told the Associates in the cafeteria I am paying for their lunch if they keep the clients engaged, which they did.”

About the photo:

Seven days before my youngest daughter's 8th birthday, her wish was to ride the MRT for the first time. I told Elisa… “Let’s go on a tour of Metro Manila via the MRT”. BTW, that MRT station in the photo is the same station where me and my clients rode the train.

I added politely.. “We did not stop at the Recruitment slide…. We lost the deal at the Recruitment slide. So traveling here was a way to save the deal”

Three weeks later on December 31 at 10pm local time… we had a final call with the client who said “We select you IF AND ONLY IF that Recruiter hires all our associates”. We dedicated the Recruiter to their account.
