I was 3 months tenure in a BPO company when one of my accounts is sunsetting because the client is opening a captive site. My process and entire Team are required to transfer.

I conducted Focus Group Discussions and 26 Associates want to stay.

I informed the project team and then the following day, our big boss called and asked “Hey Patrick, you know there’s an agreement at very senior levels to transfer 100%. So why decide to keep the 26 Associates?”

I told him politely.. “While the client’s organization is a great global company with a deep history of existence, our 26 Associates and me believe our company is also a great global company with a deep history of real people, providing real solutions to our stakeholders. They feel a resemblance of home here and want to stay.”

He instructed me to set up a series of Town Halls and his key message was:

“For those who want to stay, thank you. I am happy you want to stay. For those who decide to transfer…. (with hands clasped together) please, please, please… for whatever reason you decide to come back… please email me. I will personally make sure to welcome you back home”

One of the transferring leaders asked “Everyone knows we all need to transfer. Who influenced you we have the option to stay?”

He replied politely.. “We are family and I am the father of this home. No one influences me to tell my children they can”t stay or they can’t come back home”. Everyone started cheering.

65 Associates stayed. Another 50+ came back home within 12 months.

Throughout my career in the automotive & BPO industries, I sometime get attractive offers to work in another country.

In my family, we always ask our Dad’s advice for any major decision. He will tell me the pros and cons and then his personal opinion, as such:

“Anak, a lot of very smart Filipinos have already left the country. I think you are smart too. Your roots are in the Philippines. Stay here and help the Philippines grow.”

With humble collaboration with ALL my Teams:

•created multiple BPO wins in Bicol, Tarlac, Bataan, Davao, Pampanga, Metro Manila, and Cebu

•won multiple new logos and expansions

•promoted several hundred of leaders

(DAD… this one’s for you po)

•And…. We have created several thousands of jobs across the countryside so that smart Filipinos can be with their families and do not need to uproot themselves to work elsewhere.
