It was November 2010. I just got my Christmas bonus and the family was having breakfast in a hamburger restaurant in Makati. Nina was aged 14, my son Great was 11, Tres was 9 and Elisa was just 3 years old at that time.

I asked my 4 awesome kids “Kids, what do you want for Christmas?”

I was surprised how they started to whisper to each other. Then they said “Papa we discussed this already amongst ourselves. How much is your budget for our gifts? We didn’t tell you but we started saving some of our school allowance this year. This Christmas we want to be the ones who will give gifts to street children instead on receiving gifts.”

They continued saying.. “We’ll buy toys from Divisoria toy market and wrap it so the street kids can experience opening a Christmas gift. The gift wrap will be color blue for boys, red for girls and yellow for unisex toys like a chess board”

We went to their grandparents after breakfast to share their gift idea and asked for additional sponsorship. Their grandmother, Lola Pat, suggested to “also give food aside from toys”. Their grandfather, Lolo Jim, suggested “Go to churches 2-3 hours drive outside Metro Manila. There’s less people giving gifts and food to street kids in the provinces. It can also be a great long drive family bonding time”

My gorgeous wife is so proud about our kids and asked them… “This can be a Foundation for street kids in the future. What will you call yourselves?”

My kids said “Since we are 4 kids giving food and Christmas gifts to other kids.. we’ll call ourselves KIDS 4 KIDS”

(stay tuned to 2/4)
