I recently enrolled myself in an Accelerated Coach Training Program which is a 4-month, 3-phased program that will equip me to become a Professional Coach. This is the start of my journey towards getting my certification with the International Coach Federation (ICF). I was inspired to pursue this by my friend Coach Penny, and by my client Coach AJ.

The first two days were very intense as we learned the basics of coaching. It was very insightful and humbling because what I thought was easy turned out to be quite difficult. One of the topics was about the difference between mentoring and coaching. We realized how loosely we use the word coaching in the work place. While this may sound simple, it is difficult to unlearn and correct it in the workplace. One example in the BPO industry, we have what is called a weekly 30-minute coaching sessions between our Team Leaders and our frontline Associates. Based on what I learned so far, what they are actually doing is more of mentoring and less of coaching.

When our ICF - Master Certified Coach Julius asked for a volunteer Coachee so he can demonstrate how coaching is done… Yup, you guessed it right, I volunteered. I felt really great and at peace after the 20-minute real-play activity.

Our other brilliant mentors in the workshop are Coach Paui and Coach Adam. My 6 classmate Coaches are Eon, Geof, Mightee, Paulo, RJ and Shayne who made it fun and engaging especially during our real-play coaching sessions. Stay tuned as I share more about what I learn in this workshop.

*About the photo

My daughter, Tres, loves to learn new skills. She sings, she’s an amazing dancer (ballet, jazz & hiphop), loves gardening, plays badminton, bikes, makes various fashion handicrafts (necklace, bracelets, key chains hats, bags), does gymnastics, competed in a national cheerleading competition, and has conducted several events hosting both live & online.

In the photo you see her catch 2 milk fishes (Bangus) when we were in Aling Nene’s Pond (ANP) in Valenzuela City when she was younger.

Recently, Tres completed a Ramp Model Training Program, MS Excel Certification, Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification and PADI Open Water Diving Certification. This evening she showed me her grades in school. She said with a CGPA of 3.7, she still qualifies as a Dean’s Lister. Proud dad here! :)
