My grandfather, Lolo Teddy, implemented a FAMILY MEETING with his wife and 3 daughters that occurred every 2-3 months.
This typically occurs on a Sunday after church and a delicious lunch cooked by our grand mother, Lola Cion. Each family member is given the opportunity to provide feedback to each of the other family members. It is a safe venue to express your sentiments, aspirations and suggestions with the intent of resolving any potential conflict, planning for the future, and to strengthen the love and relationship in the family. The rule is if a negative feedback was discussed during the Family Meeting, this cannot be used as a reason to get angry or get back at the other family member. As Lola Cion always say.. “There must be love in the family”.
My parents implemented the Family Meeting tradition in our family. This family tradition is one of the reasons why me and my siblings love and support each other very much.
*About the photo
My grand father, Teodoro Conwi Veloso a.k.a. Lolo Teddy, loves to play the piano. He was the choir master of young boys and girls singing at their church. He is a very good man. He always play with us kids. He often talks about family values we must live by like "always do the right thing especially when no one is watching".
I also recall when we were kids, he would fondly sing (usually the song Sitsiritsit Alibangbang) loudly and use the bedroom door as drums just to wake us up so we won’t be late in school. Me & my siblings used to hate it coz he was noisy.
I fondly did the same with my kids when they were little and until now. They hated my noise too… haha. When I relocated to Cebu for 2 years, they said they miss my random singing (noise)… haha
I shared this to my wife and she loved the model. We implement this in our own family to our 4 awesome kids. It was fun when my eldest daughter’s husband, Titus, first participated in the Family Meeting. Everyone was interested to hear his feedback and to see his reaction to everyone’s feedback about him. We were all smiling at that time coz he was blushing and very shy.
Inspired by my Lolo Teddy’s Family Meeting feedback model... I implemented a similar model in my organization. I called it "Open MIC (My Insights Count)"
