My eldest daughter was a Badminton Silver Medalist in the PSAP-Palaro inter-school sports competition in our city when she was in 3rd year high school.

To prepare for the one-day competition the following year, she started her weekly training in January even if the competition is in November. During the semi-finals, she sprained her right ankle badly but won. Her foot was on ice-pack as she was being called for the championship competition. She was crying in pain limping towards the court while being assisted by her coach and teammates.

I shouted from the sidelines.. “Nina!! You don’t have to play anymore anak! The Officials said you are already assured with a silver! Your foot is hurt really bad!”

She wiped away her tears as she was taking her stance and told me “Papa, I came here for the gold. She will need to beat me first!” (Talunin niya muna ako, Pa. Alangan naman iabot ko na lang sa kanya yung ginto)

That is Nina Gabrielle in the photo with her badminton Silver Medal during the Private Schools Association of Paranaque City Games (PSAP - Palaro) last November 6, 2012. She is the only varsity in the history of her school to win silver medals back-to-back in any PSAP - Palaro sporting event.
