One of the pre-work activities for a Strategic Planning Session is to conduct a Retrospect.
One time, I asked each department head to provide 2 things that they would like each of the other departments to Stop, Start, and Continue. I consolidated it and shared the feedback to all the department heads. Interestingly, there were 3 types of reactions.
The first group of department heads were very defensive about the negative feedback about their department. They agreed with the positive feedback but got offended with the negative feedback. They gave explanations about each negative item called out by the other department towards their department. A few even retaliated with negative feedback about the other department.
The second group of department heads had no reaction. (coo.. coo..) When I reviewed the consolidated file, they were the department heads who had minimal, incomplete and late inputs submitted to me.
The third group of department heads were very appreciative of the feedback. They used it as valuable input to their own departmental Strategic Planning.
*About the photo
When my eldest daughter was in grade school, their teacher asked their class to write their names on a piece of paper. Then, this paper was passed around to all students who were asked to describe the person who’s name appears on the paper. This is the actual paper which had the written feedback from the classmates of my eldest daughter, Nina Gabrielle. This made me proud of my gorgeous wife Prudence because she raised all our children very well.

REFLECT SILENTLY and tell yourself the truth… Which group of leaders do you belong to:
- The defensive group?
- The passive group?
- The appreciative group?
