Lessons About What Not To Do
SNAPS DAY 339

While most leaders mentor you towards the right path, there are a few managers who show you what NOT to do.
Lazy managers are experts in delegating all the work irresponsibly to others so they do less effort. They disguise unloading the workload as a developmental activity but in reality, they just want to go home earlier. Abusive managers are creative in pointing the blame to others and wash their hands from guilt. They believe they are always right and never wrong. Some steal other people’s ideas. They claim the glory when things go well but when things go bad, it’s their team’s fault. Some will make a big splash as the new boss in the organization. They change everything done by the previous leader in order to announce that they have arrived versus first evaluating if the current program is effective or not or best to continue or complement.
You need to defend yourself with such managers. My experience dealing with such managers is always anchored on my personal values as a person, and, the core values of the organization I am part of. When I was starting my leadership journey, I got very affected by this. Then, I recall my Dad’s guidance when faced with this situation. He said, to take the perspective that “this person needs help and I should help the person” regardless if s/he is my boss or more senior that I am.
Helping this person includes consulting Human Resources when such unprofessional behavior continues and gets out of hand especially when harassment is involved. Meanwhile, if you still feel uncomfortable, you can write an incident report and attach your evidences to the whistleblower hotline of your organization.
