Visualize Your Future
SNAPS DAY 323

When you start the fiscal year with your Team, one of the first things you want to do collectively is to define your Team’s Wildly Important Goal (WIG). While the business imperatives are typically set by the senior leadership Team, transforming this into your Team’s WIG is the responsibility of you and your Team. Once you have agreed on your WIG, you guys need to list down the business imperatives and then the clear action steps (programs & activities) to accomplish each of the business imperatives. This will dictate the themes that you implement site-wide, department-wide, Team-wide and even up to your weekly mentorship conversations. Make sure to agree on the prioritization of all these including owners, timelines, resources, and success measures. Aside from weekly WIG sessions, identify major checkpoints so as a Team you guys can revisit and assess your journey towards achieving your WIG. This can be done monthly and then have a more detailed review during mid-year. Last but not the least, don’t forget to celebrate wins along the way big or small okay. Based on my experience, you must also acknowledge the times when your Team failed. These become learning milestones and critical turning points of your Tram’s journey towards your WIG.
*About the photo
This photo was taken in Universal Studios during my kids’ first holiday trip to the US in 2009. My son, Great, told me as he sat on the Director’s Chair: “Dad, I want to be a Director like you so I can also bring my kids to Universal Studios in the future!”. But wait there is more… when my daughter, Tres, saw this, she said “I will be higher than you, Papa!” which is why she did not seat on the Director’s Chair in the photo. I told both of them what my dad told me “Your Lolo Jim always tell me that….. the student must strive to be better than the teacher…. So yes, I want both of you to be better than me”
It was during this time that I had an insightful conversation with both of them about visualizing their future. Today, Great is a graduating Human Resource Management student at the College of Saint Benilde while Tres is a sophomore & consistent dean’s lister in De La Salle University taking up Entrepreneurship & Organization Communication.
