When Your Body Tells You To Rest

SNAPS DAY 306

11/2/20222 min read

Do not abuse your body. Leaders are so used to working extended hours and this often times takes a toll on your health. Up and coming leaders typically need to attend several training courses outside their work schedule. Some even enroll in a Masters degree to advance their studies and educational attainment. Other leaders volunteer for special projects which require them to learn new skills, attend interdepartmental meetings and sprint sessions in order to complete the projects. Once you get promoted… well, you are given more responsibilitiesss which equals more work.

Time management is planning and organizing your tasks based on what is important and what is urgent. Simply, what is urgent are high-impact tasks that needs to be completed now while what is important are high-impact tasks that are amongst your core responsibilities or business imperatives. Often times we are not prioritizing either the urgent or the important. We are blinded by the “whirlwinds” caused by improvement opportunities in your time management skills plus having a disorganized work environment. We often times feel exhausted at the end of the week but feel we have not done anything to move the needle on our business imperatives.

Some of the things I do that has helped me focus and achieve my urgent and important tasks for the day is I keep a hour for email daily focused on my key stakeholders, a lunch break and a “me time”. I reduced the number of meetings I have with my leaders so they can breathe and execute the work. I respect their weekends, holidays and personal time offs. I have increased my “date time” with my gorgeous wife Prudence to at least 3 times a week, my quality time with my 4 awesome kids and play time with my grandchild, Avree. I have also found personal purpose in sharing my leadership experience so other leaders may pick up a tip or two from my daily #365SNAPS and become successful or simply help brighten up their day.

*About the photo
The family just had a long fun day in Universal Studios Osaka Japan last May 2019. There is an evening parade near our Air BnB Home in Namba District that is why we are walking fast to catch the parade. Me and my wife told our kids to control themselves from buying anything from the shops of or else we won’t make in in time for the parade.

The woman wearing green dreadlocks hair in the photo is my eldest daughter, Nina. She walked a few steps ahead of us to encourage us to walk straight home and not be distracted by the attractive promos (whirlwinds) of the shops in Shin Sai bashi-Suji Shopping Street. We got home with 30 minutes to spare before the start of the parade….. and with a few items bought from the shops. :)
