"The Top Two Things"

SNAPS DAY 249

One job interview tip I can share is to follow a “Present, Past then Future model” when responding to questions.

But First—

Research everything about the company. Understand the job description you’re applying for and how the technical requirements of the job matches your experience. Research about your interviewer profile through LinkedIn and other social media platforms. Respect your Non Disclosure Agreements. Power dressing is key; wear a coat.

Present—

Answer questions head-on. Be detailed yet concise; sometimes it’s just a compelling yes or no and a short why. Tell the truth. Be honest about things you are not an expert on. Do not make excuses.

Future—

After you have demonstrated that you have relevant experience… at this point you’ve established credibility on that question. In one sentence, you can now commit that you can perform the tasks required or own the competency being discussed in the question, and beyond.

This PPF model can be between 3-6 sentences per question.

Yes, you have a question at the end of the interview—

Based on what you have researched about the company, ask your interviewer how the role you’re applying for can help achieve the business imperatives of the department or the organization. Or, ask what are your top 2 challenges in your organization or department, what are you doing to resolve it and how can this role help you. Listen to the response. Then, share how you can help if you’re selected.

Lastly—

Smile. Bring out your natural element and personality. Have fun.

*About the video

When Elisa was 9 years old, she asked me to role play an interview with her about the “top two things”.

6 years later… she turns 15 years old TODAY. Happy lovely birthday sweetheart. Papa loves you!

Past—

After you have given a direct answer to the question… provide at least one proof that you have hands-on experience with something similar in the past. Briefly describe the situation and the impact of the solution you did.
