IF your performance is consistently meeting all success measures and you still feel stressed because of a stressful boss, I suggest the following:

Talk to your boss and ask her/him for feedback about your performance and potential on each and every success measure. Validate if there are other success measures that needs to be added. Ask about her/his vision and goals and how can you contribute to help achieve it. Volunteer to lead projects. Agree on a regular cadence to review your overall performance; I suggest weekly. This will give you a better understanding of your boss’ character and leadership brand. It also allows her/him to get to know you and your potential more.

IF for some reason it continues to be a stressful and toxic work environment after several weeks, then have a more direct conversation with your boss. This time ask if he can allow you to give her/him feedback about how you feel working in her/his department. Continue the weekly cadence and if this still goes south, I recommend you speak with your HR department to inform them of the situation. Ask for the process on how to get transferred to another department. Then, request for the transfer as soon as a position that matches your experience opens up.

This is a tough situation to be in and I suggest you remain professional about it. Never burn bridges with your former boss. Greet her/him “Good morning!” even if s/he may not return the greeting. You don’t have to feel awkward when you see each other in the common areas in the office because s/he feels the same way so its best you remain as professional colleagues. Focus your energy on your performance and growing your career in the new department with your new boss. After a few weeks, things will get better.

IF it’s the organization that is giving you the stress and toxic work environment even when you have transferred to another department and again performed your best, then its time to find a better work environment. One that appreciates you as a human being, has programs that inspire you to bring out your natural element’s best, and has a positive culture where you want to grow your career.

The right amount of challenge to push you to be great is good but too much and continuous stress is not good. Do not put your health and “overall” wellness at risk. Go and find the a work environment of your choice.

Find a Coach who can help guide you as you think of next steps in your career.
