Leaders are role models of any organization. Our Associates look up to us. No matter what we say, they will follow what they see us DO. If they see us actuating the mission and culture of the organization, they will follow us.

One day I was tasked to help our Recruitment Leader strengthen partnerships with targeted large universities. We invited the Deans and key officers from different universities to our Site to experience the culture of our company.

One of the usual questions after we present the company overview is “Why do we want to encourage our students to work with you”.

I always tell the Deans I would let our Associates answer that question. I bring them to the elevator lobby. Then, I tell them to talk to any Associate who comes out of the elevator and ask them any question about the company like:

“What is the mission of the company and how are you demonstrating it in your work and personal life?” Or, “Do you love working here and why?”

I would leave them to do it by themselves. They can go back to the Boardroom when they are satisfied and done engaging with our Associates.

100% of the time, the Deans would come back to the Boardroom with a big smile on their faces and share the various positive experiences talking to our Associates. They are pleasantly surprised that every single associate know about the company’s mission and proudly talk about how they live and breathe the company’s culture in how they engage with the customers they service, and, how this also aligns beautifully in their personal lives.

The Deans would also say, the Associates speak highly of the senior leadership Team. They say you are the ones who welcome new hires in person, you attend all recognition events, you sit with Associates in the cafeteria, you join community service, and they feel comfortable walking up to you and chat about anything.

*About the video

We saw family members young and old participate in this activity in Ueno Park, during one of our family vacations in Japan. While we don’t know if this was a religious or cultural activity. What’s fascinating to see is how family members from different ages take part in this activity. I am confident the younger generation will continue this tradition or ritual down the ages.

If anyone know what this activity is, kindly share. Thank you.

p.s.

June 29. It is the birthday of my brother, Coach Nath, who is one of my life's idols who is a role model to his children and to his dragon boat community.
