*About the photo

This photo was during one of the Team Building activities I had with my leadership Team. The goal of this activity was to pass the ball through the half-pipes without dropping it. The Team whose ball reaches the most number of pipes win.

The secret to winning this game is to know your leaders. Know their strengths and weaknesses. Mentor and coach them to further improve their competencies. The ball is like the Associates who they lead. Leaders must do everything they can to ensure everyone progresses to the next stage of their careers and no one gets dropped.

The greatest trust you can give someone is to lead your Team.

This is why we must make sure to know our leaders more than just what is on their resume and their personal circumstances. Get to know their personal goals and aspirations. What is their personal vision, mission and core values as a leader, and as a person? Ask how they keep themselves learning new things and updated with the latest in customer experience, building high performing Teams and transformation plus the industry that you operate in. Leaders must be subject matter experts in their craft. With that, check how they build a learning environment in the Team where everyone is encouraged to share best practices, collaborate and work together.

Understand how they deal with tough problems, setbacks and failures. Also, how do they coach, motivate and lead their Team when the Team goes through these challenges. Inquire how they encourage and empower Team members to share their voices, insights, suggestions and dissenting opinions. Seek more information how they ensure each and every member of the Team delivers and exceeds the results expected from them. How do they rally the Team to constantly do their very best to be the best in everything that they do. Moreover, understand how do they develop and transform their Team members to become leaders in the future.

Last but not the least, check on your leaders and your frontline Associates regularly. Conduct skip levels and focused group discussions to ensure everyone is supported, motivated and has access to you.
