My brother was a guest speaker in a Multicultural Diversity Conference some years ago in the US. The auditorium was packed with over 2,000 attendees. He was asked to speak about “Diversity, Teamwork, and A Paddle, All in the Same Boat”.

He is popularly known as Coach Nath by his Los Angeles, and global Dragon Boat community since he is one of the coaches of Team USA who has won multiple awards from international competitions. Coach Nath started paddling in Manila Bay since he was a teenager in the Philippines.

Coach Nath asked our Dad for an opening spiel because he already knows the meat of his talk and just needed a great opening.

Dad immediately said “e pluribus unum!”

Dad continued coaching my brother saying.. Ask your audience to take out a dollar bill. Ask for a volunteer to come up the stage and show you the words, e pluribus unum. Then, give them a prize or something, which my brother did.

Dad told him to shout, “out of the many, there is one”. Then, connect it to your speech wherein.. “out of the diversity in the dragon boat, you can only win if you all paddle as ONE.”
