During a family holiday with friends, my daughter Tres was having a conversation with her uncle Judel, who is one of my best friends since first year high school. She asked him to share his leadership journey and other leadership advises so she can learn from it. Judel happily shared as follows:

He started in an entry level risk engineer role in the insurance industry right after graduating from college. He got fascinated with the insurance industry and strived to understand it end to end. After mastering how to assess the risks of various types of properties, he decided to move into an underwriting role so he can understand how to create the insurance coverage and policies based on the risk assessments provided. After developing his expertise in underwriting, he moved into a sales role to gain hands-on experience how to market and sell insurance across different clientele. He then deliberately studied the various back office functions of the insurance industry from accounting, taxes, government policies & regulations, analytics, automation and creating various efficiencies in operations, etc including creation of competitive strategies and coordination with related industries.

He told Tres that whatever industry you want to be in, you must decide to learn everything across various roles end to end so that you become a subject master in the industry. In the same breath, you must learn to grow your leadership maturity, learn from others, learn & grow from mistakes, share best practices and have fun as you grow.

This photo was taken during a stop over in La Union province on the way to Judel’s 49th birthday celebration in a beach in Vigan City. This was also his thanksgiving celebration for being recently hired as the General Manager of the Insurance company of a world renown group of companies.
