My father comes from a family who joins debates, oratorical contests, and the like. When I was very young, I told him.. “Sorry dad, I can’t do what you do coz I am very shy. I am not like you who has read lots & lots of books, won several debates & oratorical contests, always at the top of your class, and have spoken in front of large audiences”.

He told me: Don’t worry, you don’t have to. I won’t pressure you in the same way I was pressured to join all of those activities by my relatives and school administrators. Be who you want to be, do what you want to do but promise me one thing… no matter what happens always do the right thing especially when no one is watching.

My dad’s mentorship through the years helped eliminated about 90% of my fears when I speak in a large audience.

The secret technique that dad taught me was to “take a really deep breath and smile” before I open my mouth and say the first word in my speech.

We always laugh together when I share how my speech went coz I tell him his “take a really deep breath and smile technique” is NOT working because my 10% fear stays throughout my speeches”.

Dad would always say…

“Ricky, the remaining 10% fear is the reason why you finished the speech.”

In one of my organizations, they call me Mr. #ilivethemission

I always tell them it was my dad who coined that hashtag not me. In fact, this is the second hashtag coz the original hashtag wasn’t approved coz it has the name of the company.

The original hashtag I proposed (dad coined) was #OneWithXxxxxxxOne
