As a young leader, you are laser focused on building your competencies, solidifying your expertise and expanding your network. You need to train harder, work longer hours and delivery on-time. It’s really just pure work, work, work.

You still don’t know what working smart means at this stage in your career. That’s fine. Your life’s circumstances will lead you towards working smart especially once you start to be responsible for a loved one (like an elderly parent) or start a family.

I suggest you need to develop a strong sense of purpose so you don’t stop when you’re tired, sleepy or mentally exhausted. Expect your work will be extremely busy, week on week and your emails will pile up. This will take some of your weekends and a lot of your sleeping time. Make sure to stay healthy, take vitamins and keep a positive mindset. Pray constantly.

Your second wind to continue going forward despite all the odds comes from your sources of true strength - your family, your partner, your community.

I strongly suggest to speak heart-to-heart with your family members especially your partner about your goals. Make them know that they are part of your goals. Seek their understanding to support you 100%. This ensures that when you seem like giving up, your partner comes to you with a cup of coffee, a sandwich and tells you “I’m just right here”.

SHOUT-OUT to all of you who go for second winds every day in your career journey… Trust me… you can do it!

*About the photo

One of the stress relievers that is popular to tourists is “plate smashing” in Isdaan Restaurant Laguna. When we went there in 2014 our 4 awesome kids tried it for fun. My eldest asked me why I did not throw a plate coz I seem to be the one who is always stressed with so many work. I told my daughter, Nina, “spending the weekend with our family trying new things brings me joy and already takes my stress away”.
