My first day at work in my very first job was a Trainer of the Spare Parts Department of a world renown Japanese car manufacturing plant.

I met our AVP, Kotani-san, at 8am. He asked me about the various trainings I have conducted as a student leader. He handed me a book on Storage Techniques. At 11am, I returned the book and he invited me for lunch. After lunch, we went to our Central Parts Depot at Tanyag Bicutan. He told the Warehouse Supervisor.. “Celmar-san, please teach Patrick-san actual storage techniques in the warehouse”. At 3pm, I was back in the office and gave me the training manual to review.

At 4:45pm, my senior Trainer, Elaine, told me I need to join her and Kotani-san at our newest dealership in Pasig to observe her conduct the training. When we got to the dealership, I set up the OHP (overhead projector) and placed training manuals on the tables of the participants. I sat at the back of the training room beside Kotani-san. When the training was about to start, Kotani-san said in a loud voice.

“Elaine-san, sit down. Patrick-san will train”

Both me and Elaine were shocked as she sat down at the back and as I went in front of the training room. I took a deep breathe, smiled and started the training. I flipped through the OHP acetates as I discussed the Storage Techniques. I was able to answer practical questions from the trainees. When there were scenario-based questions that I am unfamiliar with, Elaine and Kotani-san immediately helped me answer the questions. After the training, Kotani-san went in front of the class and revealed to the Parts Manager, George Geronimo, and his staff that it was my first day at work as a fresh hire out of college. For the first time in my life I froze and blushed as Kotani-san gave me a snappy and polite bow appreciating my first training.

When I got home, I told my gorgeous wife Prudence that “I went on overtime work on my very first job for 3 hours and I will be rich on my very first pay day!!”

This is my daughter, Tres. It was her first day in her “intern job”. As a marketing assistant, she was asked to prepare a presentation of her ideas how to market the shoe brand being sold by their company. She told me she was shaking and stuttering while she was presenting in front of the Marketing Head and other staff coz she was not expecting this to happen on her first day. She also told me she felt really good after her manager told “Good job!” after her presentation. Then, they went to Glorieta Mall and she was asked to be a mystery shopper in their store. She gave good feedback about how their salesman handled her queries. Me and my gorgeous wife Prudence met her in Glorieta and treated her for buffalo-wings & pizza dinner.
